Have a look at the photo above. We think this big field, with the lines running across it, is the site of  a lost medieval mansion of significant historical importance.

We think it was the home of the Middletons, a Welsh family that was a major force in the land, especially in later Elizabethan times. Fragments of roof tile found on the site in the late 1990s confirm the presence of an elite dwelling place.

From 16th to 31st July 2011 we teamed up with experts from Swansea and Trinity St David universities, staff and up to 30 enthusiastic volunteers  to carry out an archaeaological dig to uncover the early settlement on what is now Waun Las NNR, just 5 minutes walk from our Great Glasshouse.

So what did we find?

Have a look on the side menu background information about the big dig.

From July 14th – 29th 2012, we’re digging again. Please come and visit us during the dig – we’ve daily tours at 2pm -  and have a look at our Blog to find out the latest news.
