(English) Landscapes in Lino by Ian Phillips
Exploring the beautiful Welsh landscape and the weather in all its diversity is the mission of artist Ian Phillips who will be exhibiting in our Courtyard Art Gallery from June 2nd to July 31st 2012..
A founder member of Aberystwyth Printmakers, Ian’s work has been acquired by public bodies including the National Library of Wales and MOMA Wales.
Says Ian: “Early inspiration from Japanese woodcut artists led me to develop the unique method of reduction linocut hand printing I use
today. This method allows me to explore the beautiful Welsh landscape and its weather in all its diversity.
“This process starts with a long walk and a sketchbook until, gradually, I start to see the relationship between natural forms emerge.
“Looking for natural drama, contrasting textures and strong patterns I aim for decorative simplicity in my prints while retaining a
pared-down topographical accuracy.”
Since that first show, Ian has exhibited in many group exhibitions in both Wales, England and abroad and has had fifteen solo
exhibitions in Wales since 2005.
In 2010, Ian was made a member of the Royal Cambrian Academy and was invited to exhibit at the Convergence Divergence exhibition at the Hong Kong Graphic Arts Fiesta.
