40. Principality House
This impressive building is the only part of William Paxton's mansion that remains today. It was the servants' quarters, brew house, laundry and kitchens. Rumour has it that Paxton created a sightline from his much larger mansion into these servants' quarters and onwards down to the stables (where our restaurant is today). Having survived the fire of 1931, which destroyed the main mansion, these servants' quarters later became a farmhouse named Trawscoed. These days, it has a new role as the Botanic Garden's Lifelong Learning Centre and is named Principality House after its renovation sponsors, the Principality Building Society.
In front of Principality House is a scaled-down floor plan of Paxton's mansion, on the site where it once stood.
