48. Organic Farm & Estate Walks
The fields surrounding the formal areas of the site also belong to the National Botanic Garden of Wales. They are farmed organically for sheep, cattle and hay, and are being managed to encourage the spread of native wild plants. The landscape holds many secrets. Look hard and you may find traces of the original 17th century Middleton Hall (which Paxton turned into a farm), as well as those of a fishpond, quarries, carriage tracks and water features. The fashion for big vistas on 19th century estates led to removal of hedgerows and many of the old parkland trees were sold for timber in the 1940s. Seven starter farms, such as Waunlas, were created on the ruins of the estate in the 1930s but their time has come and gone.
If you would like to look for these relics or just wander around these historic grounds, there is good news. The Estate is being gradually opened up for visitors. Every summer there are guided walks to look at some of the historic features, flower-rich meadows, ancient trees and spectacular vistas across the Garden. Eventually it is hoped to open up a clearly waymarked network of footpaths across the whole Estate.
