The Science Centre

The science programme at the NBGW will be dedicated to plant and fungi conservation, systematic research and environmental education. Specialising in conservation systematics (where the latest molecular and computing technologies are applied to the problems of conserving plants) the NBGW will play a leading role in documenting, understanding and conserving the Earth’s bio-diversity.

The research programme will focus geographically on the temperate and Mediterranean regions of the world linking closely with the plant collections on site.
We have already become the lead partner in a project to conserve Britain’s rarest tree
(Sorbus leyana) and are collaborating with several research organisations in developing major international research projects.
