The Middleton Hall Farm Estate.
The Trustees and the management team are seeking to develop the balance of the Middleton Hall Estate in accordance with the general ethos of the Garden.
The plan includes the conversion of the Estate farms to organic livestock production, entry of a substantial area of land into the Habitat Scheme, traditional woodland management, and communication of these developments to a wide spectrum of potential visitors.
In addition to the many innovative initiatives in horticulture, conservation, science and education the NBGW is to establish its own organic farm on the estate. The principles of sustainability, co- existence with natural systems, environmental enhancement and ethical livestock systems that underpin organic production complement the aims and objectives of the Garden well.
Part of the land involved will be specifically managed to preserve a range of wildlife habitats under a management plan agreed with the Habitat Scheme. Many such habitats are becoming increasingly threatened and those that have been identified on the estate include species- rich meadows, natural woodland, and water fringes.
The farm will be run on a commercial basis though external funding will be sought for its establishment. The main enterprises will be the production of organic beef and lamb using traditional Welsh breeds.
The effect on meat quality of grazing species- rich permanent pasture in comparison to grass/clover leys will be examined.
Visitors will be able to follow a farm trail to see the workings of the organic farm, a range of natural habitats and visual features of the parkland estate. Visitors will also be able to see the processes of organic vegetable production at first hand in a dedicated display area that will also feature national collections of vegetable cultivars.
This venture will also provide additional opportunities for scientific study and education. Pre-booked educational tours will be available, as will opportunities for student work placement. It is hoped to run courses in all aspects of organic production especially the key process of conversion.
