17. Auricula Theatre
Once fashionable in English 'Great Houses' during the 18th and 19th centuries, there are now only two large Auricula Theatres in Britain - one at Calke Abbey in Derbyshire, and now this one. An Auricula Theatre is an arrangement of tiered staging, like in a theatre. Onto this are placed varieties of Auricula, colourful multi-headed flowers on a single stem, which flower from the middle of March to the end of May.
The plants on display in the theatre will be renewed as each season changes. Auriculas will take the stage from the end of March until late May. Pelargoniums, Fuschias and Beonias take us through the summer months. Following this through winter and early spring, Holly varieties, Ivies, Hellebores and foliage plants will deck the shelves through the winter and early spring.
