New orchid on the block

Singing superstar Katherine Jenkins was the guest of honour at the National Botanic Garden of Wales to celebrate the start of planting in the stunning new Tropical House.

The chart-topping 27-year-old was presented with an orchid named in her honour to mark the occasion.

She said: “I love orchids. It’s such an honour to have one named after me. I’m so lucky.”

The 40-metre Tropical House – designed by Welsh-born, New York-based architect John Belle – is due to open on July 19 and will boast majestic palms, luscious lilies, bamboo, blue ginger – and 1,000 orchids.

The Neath-born mezzo soprano was due to take to the stage at her first ever music festival, Katherine In The Park, at Margam Park, Port Talbot, on Sunday July 8.

Katherine said it was an honour, adding: "I love orchids so much, so to have my own one and such a beautiful one is fantastic.

"I love the frilly edge and it has a hint of pink which is my favourite colour."

Fan Iris Baker, of Bishopston, Swansea, who was at the gardens to see her idol, said: "I will be there along with thousands of others.

"A bit of rain won't keep us away from what will be a great night."

The Katherine Jenkins Orchid is on show now at the gift shop at the National Botaninc Garden of Wales and Katherine Jankins fans and orchid fans alike can order one of the exclusive plants – which are only available from the Garden.
