Momentous day for the Garden
TODAY is a monumental milestone in the history of the National Botanic Garden of Wales.
This is how the Garden’s Director Kevin Lamb greeted the confirmation of the new funding deal with the Welsh Assembly.
Mr Lamb said: “We have been working hard to achieve this landmark agreement for more than a year. It’s been on the top of my agenda since I arrived here at the Garden in January 2007 and this is a great day for everyone connected with this fabulous place, with Carmarthenshire – and all of Wales.
“I would like to pay special tribute to all the staff and volunteers working at the Garden for their strenuous efforts through what has been a time of some uncertainty. But what is really encouraging is that – unlike before – this new deal is really all about rewarding success rather than bailing out failure. And that’s a very positive message for us all.
“We were always confident that we had an excellent case for a new funding deal but to hear the words of the Deputy First Minister’s announcement was very gratifying indeed.
“His statement echoed exactly what we had set out to achieve: a funding package ‘intended to provide a sound financial base on which the Garden can consolidate and grow and take its rightful place as a prestigious national institution’.
“We know that the real work starts now.
“And we hope that everyone who cares about the Garden will come and join us on our free day on March the 1st for what will now be an extra special day of celebration.”
