New chairman looks forward to ‘bright future’

The National Botanic Garden of Wales has a new man at the helm. Robert Jolliffe, 47, who has a banking background and has been a trustee for two years, is succeeding Robin Lewis OBE as chairman of trustees.

Mr Lewis, the Lord Lieutenant of Dyfed, is standing down as chairman after seeing the Garden successfully through the recovery plan to the new funding deal with the Welsh Assembly, which was announced earlier this month.

Mr Jolliffe (pictured right with Mr Lewis), who until recently worked for RBS as Managing Director, Head of Debt Capital Markets, said he was proud to be taking over as chairman: “The National Botanic Garden of Wales is a very young institution which has already had to face some big challenges. I’d like to pay tribute to Robin Lewis who has skilfully steered the Garden through some difficult times to the excellent position we find ourselves in.

“The Garden now faces a bright and positive future which will allow the management here to concentrate on developing this fabulous place as a centre for education and science excellence as well as a world class visitor attraction.

“I’m very much looking forward to playing a part in this important new era for the Garden and I am proud to take on the role of chairman of trustees.”

News of Mr Jolliffe’s new role, which was announced at the Trustees’ meeting on Monday (February 18), coincides with the appointment of two new trustees:

- Camilla Swift, the former editor at large with Saga magazine; and - Heather Stevens, one of the founders of Admiral insurance.

Mr Jolliffe said: “Camilla has a strong background in publishing, marketing and horticulture and her vast knowledge and excellent contacts will be of enormous benefit to the Garden.

“Heather has a wealth of experience and a tremendous track record in the commercial world as well as a passion for developing a sustainable future.

“I’m very pleased to welcome them both to the team.”
