Genetics at the Garden
Use the living collections in the Wallace Garden to help pupils understand the key concepts of genetics, natural selection and evolution and selective breeding.
Plants in Action
Investigate the adaptations of plants to the Mediterranean climate (including drought resistance, reproductive strategies and the ability to withstand fire) by studying the living collections inside the Great Glasshouse.
Plant projects workshop – bring your students to start project work for assessment which can be continued back in school. We offer arrange of activities suitable for AS and A2 students. Plant physiology workshop – hands-on activities and the opportunity to see unusual plant specimens will increase student understanding.
Ecological Studies and Field Work
Investigate a variety of habitats on site, and compare the number and type of organism found there. Use data-logging equipment to quantify abiotic factors and build up a profile of the habitats. The Garden covers 568 acres, and contains a number of different habitats e.g. woodland, meadow grassland, improved grassland and freshwater ponds, streams and lakes. We can arrange investigations studying one habitat in detail, or comparing two habitats, covering ecology techniques, conservation and sustainable development issues linked to the future management of the Welsh countryside.
Sustainable Development
Use the Botanic Garden to help students understand about sustainable development – the key issues of recycling, renewable energy and waste disposal are covered as pupils follow a trail around the Garden. Discussion of the alternatives leads them to consider the choices they make in their own lives, and how these affect the future.
Technology
Workshop session to introduce students to design and construction at the Garden. Teachers can select a main theme from systems and control, environmental impact or the building of the Great Glasshouse.
Marketing & Customer Care Workshop Days
Session to encourage students to survey the Garden and consider how the facilities are suitable for different groups of visitors.
