Fun and Games
Can’t make it to the Olympics? Then why not take part in the National Botanic Garden ‘Games’ instead.
From August 6-10, visitors will be invited to take part in the ‘Garden Olympics’ to see how far they can throw the Rhubarb Javelin, how fast they can run the Spud and Spoon Race, and what distance they can ‘shot-put’ a turnip.
The Garden Olympics is the brainchild of interpretation officer Bruce Langridge who is looking forward to what he is calling ‘The Greatest Show on Turf’. He says: “All the events will take place on the grassy surrounds of the outer-walled garden and we will have presentation ceremonies in our newly-opened Performance Stage.”
The emphasis is on fun, says Bruce, and there are plans for potato sack racing and welly-wanging and lots more garden-related sports besides. Said Bruce: “The gardeners here are keen for us to include synchronised weeding and slug wrestling in the events but our version of LOCOG (Llanarthne Organising Committee of the Organic Garden) has ruled these out!”
The programme for the day is…………….
Venue: Outer Double Walled Garden
12.00 Spud & Spoon Races
1pm Swede Shot Put
2pm Wellie Wanging
3pm Rhubarb Javelin
All events followed by willow wreath making and badge awarding ceremonies in the Performance Stage + Hula hooping, skipping ropes and boules.
There’s lots going on at the Garden throughout the summer holidays beside the Garden Olympics, with the return of ‘Meet A Meerkat’, falconry display days, the Welsh Tree Festival, pond-dipping, ‘make you own windmill’ and creepy crawly sessions.
