June in Plant Sales
June marks the transition from spring into summer and our gardens burst into life with bees, butterflies and other beneficial insects all busy at work. If we are lucky, our efforts earlier in the year will be rewarded with magnificent shows of blooms and a riot of different colours and textures.
Inevitably there will be areas of the garden which need that little something extra to make the perfect picture. Fuchsias are a good choice for both hanging baskets and containers with trailing and bush varieties. Planted with Nemesia, Bacopa or Petunia ‘Million Bells’ they will provide a long season of interest and brighten the smallest patio or courtyard garden.
It is not too late to plant containerised trees, roses and shrubs in the garden provided they are adequately watered. Try Sobaria sorbifolia ‘Sem’ for its delicately coloured foliage or Deutzia x hybrida ‘Magicien’ for its lovely pink and white flowers or Corylus avellana ‘Contorta’ for the Japanese style garden.
Roses are coming into bloom now and we have a lovely selection from David Austin Roses, which associate well with some of the more traditional perennials to create imposing mixed borders. Amongst cottage garden favourites, in flower now or coming into flower, are Aquilegia, Penstemons, Phlox, Hollyhocks, Lupins, Delphiniums, Astrantia and Verbena.
One of the delights of the Plant Sales area at the National Botanic Garden of Wales is being able to wander around the gardens and see how your chosen plants will look once in the ground. You can also see which plants look good to plant alongside them and take ideas home to your own garden.
We think we’ve got a winning combination, but don’t just take our word for it, read what some of our customers have to say…
“Superb layout – one of the best!”
“……….. very impressed by the standard and upkeep and planting.”
Entry to Plant Sales and Coffee Shop is free to everyone during normal opening hours, with easy access parking. And remember, as a Member of the National Botanic Garden of Wales you will enjoy a 10% discount on all full price merchandise purchased in our Plant Sales shop.
