Lose yourself in landscape

There is some captivating art on show at the National Botanic Garden this winter.

Entitled, ‘Three Painters: Landscape Now’, the new exhibition in the Garden’s Gallery features the work of Karen Pearce, Gareth Hugh Davies and Nigel Wood.

Together, they offer a show that is both resonant and evocative – landscapes you can really lose yourself in.

Karen Pearce has lived in Aberystwyth since the sixties and trained at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth. She says: “I am interested in how landscape is perceived and how each of us brings our own experience to bear upon our sense of a place.”

Gareth Hugh Davies, who lives in Llandybie, Carmarthenshire – not a million miles from his home town Llanelli – also explores the personal experience of landscape: “I am interested in the disparity between what is familiar in our environment and its power to disturb and confront us.”

Nigel Wood’s paintings have a quiet intensity and surreal beauty that matches the wild and open moorland landscape near his home in West Wales.

Judith Rees, who has curated the exhibition, says: “The work on show here is truly compelling. Its treatment of the light and dark elements in landscape is intriguing and the whole effect is captivating – these are landscapes to really lose yourself in.”
