May in Plant Sales
After the driest March for fifty years and the hottest Easter weekend since 1949 the Botanic Gardens are looking particularly lovely.
For those of us who don’t have quite so much space to fill, our thoughts now turn to summer borders, hanging baskets and containers. Summer bedding displays were made popular by the Victorians and are still the choice of many gardeners.
For something a little different try a massed planting of Heliotrope edged or interspersed with different Lavenders. The heady scents of cherry, vanilla and lavender are quite intoxicating and the contrasting silver foliage of the lavender with the dark green leaves of the Heliotrope makes a stunning display.
Fuchsias are a good choice for both hanging baskets and containers with trailing and bush varieties providing a long season of interest to brighten the smallest patio or courtyard garden. It is not too late to plant perennials, containerised trees, roses and shrubs in the garden. Try Sobaria sorbifolia ‘Sem’ for its delicately coloured foliage or Grevillea ‘Canberra Gem’ with its bright orangey red terminal flower clusters. Acer palmatum is for sale at a very special price or Corylus avellana contorta for the Japanese style garden.
We have a lovely selection of David Austin Roses, which associate well with some of the more traditional perennials to create imposing mixed borders. Amongst cottage garden favourites are Aquilegia, Penstemons, Phlox, Hollyhocks, Lupins, Delphiniums, Astrantia and Verbena.
In the more shady or boggy parts of our gardens Astilbe ‘Fanal’, ‘Rheinland’ and ‘Peach Blossom’, Ligularia ‘Desdemona’, ‘The Rocket’ and ‘Przewalskii’ and Hostas provide an excellent show.
