New exhibition by Iwan Bala

NATURE/CULTURE

Iwan Bala is one of the most positive and dynamic figures in Welsh culture and his work will be on display at the National Botanic Garden from March 1^st. Now Lecturer at the School of Art, Film and Media at The University of Wales Trinity Saint David, Iwan is a multi disciplinarian and has published numerous books, articles and essays on contemporary art in Wales as well as presenting and researching television programmes, teaching and curating.

His latest exhibition “Our Nature” explores the conflicts and conjunctions that exist at the wellspring of creativity, where uncontrolled inspiration is moulded and cultivated, where human attempts to control nature are in themselves natural.

Speaking of this driving force, Iwan comments: “In maps we see how nature, in the form of rivers and mountain ranges, affects human settlement patterns. Culture grows and evolves, like plants. The word culture relates to the world of cultivation and growth.

“Language develops like plantlife: words grow from seeds of creation into poetry – irregular, uncontrolled, then ‘cultivated’.

“Drawing is the same: partly spontaneous, wild, unconscious, partly ‘cultivated’.” 

Iwan’s work will be on show until May 1.

Iwan Bala yw un o ffigurau mwyaf positif a deinamig y diwylliant Cymreig, a bydd ei waith yn cael ei arddangos yn yr Ardd Fotaneg Genedlaethol o Fawrth 1^af. Mae bellach yn gweithio fel Uwch-ddarlithydd yn Ysgol y Celfyddydau a’r Dyniaethau yng Ngholeg y Drindod, Caerfyrddin, ac mae’n berson amlddisgyblaeth. Mae wedi cyhoeddi nifer o lyfrau, erthyglau ac ysgrifau ar gelf gyfoes yng Ngyumru, yn ogystal â chyflwyno ac ymchwilio ar amryw o raglenni teledu, dysgu a gweithio fel curadur.

Mae ei arddangosfa ddiweddaraf “Ein Natur” yn edrych ar y cydweithio a’r gwrthdaro  yn y byd creadigol. Lle mae ysbrydoliaeth ddi-reolaeth yn dwyn siâp ac yn cael ei drin, lle mae ymgais dynolryw i reoli natur yn naturiol eu hunain.

 Wrth sôn am hyn, dywedodd Iwan: “Ar fapiau, rydym yn gweld sut mae natur, drwy afonydd a mynyddoedd yn effeithio ar le mae pobl yn dewis ymgartrefi. Mae diwylliant yn tyfu, fel planhigion. Mae diwylliant yn tyfu ac yn esblygu, fel planhigion. Mae’r gair ‘diwylliant’ gyfystyr â thyfiant.

“Mae iaith yn datblygu mewn ffordd sy’n debyg i blanhigion: mae geiriau yn hadau sy’n tyfu’n farddoniaeth – yn anghyson, afreolus, ac yna wedi eu trin.” Mae celf yn yr un modd: yn rhannol ddigymell a gwyllt, ac yn rhannol wedi ei drin.” 

Bydd gwaith Iwan yn cael ei arddangos tan Fai 1^aft.
