Pirates, plague and plants for health

Visitors to the National Botanic Garden of Wales will be transported back in time 400 years this Easter.

Actors from Chance Encounters Theatre will tell the story of the spice-trading Middleton family who moved to the land where the Garden now stands in the early 1600s.

In ‘Pirates, Plague and Plants for Health’, visitors will take an interactive trail where they will meet sailors, servants and wise-women who will help them find out how the Middleton’s made their fortune and how they tried to avoid getting the plague.

Meanwhile, Dyfed Carriage Club are also promising a cracking show on Easter Monday. There will also be music, magic, balloon-modelling and a display by Black Mountain Falconry.

The carriage club – such a big hit last Easter – are promising brighter, more colourful and highly-decorated carriages for their ‘parade’. Club spokesman Lester Dagge said: “We will parade through the Garden and then it’ll be time for the ‘best dressed carriage’ awards. It’s great fun and a lovely place to be.”

For plant lovers, there is “A Wednesday Wander Through the Med” – guided walks of the Mediterranean collection in Lord Foster’s stunning Great Glasshouse. The guided walks take place every Wednesday throughout April, beginning on the 4th.

The world-famous Quack Pack will be in the Garden on Easter Saturday and Sunday and birds-of-prey fans should make a date to see displays by Black Mountains Falconry on April 11 and 12.
