Special project puts landmarks in the picture

A royal residence, a bishop’s palace, a lighthouse, an airport and a couple of castles; all have been the focus of a landmark photographic project involving 150 schoolchildren from learning support units in schools from Milford Haven to Swansea.

The finale of the two-year ‘Learning From the Landscape’ project is a grand display of images at the National Botanic Garden of Wales, to be opened by the High Sheriff of Dyfed Thomas Lloyd OBE DL at 10.45am on Friday September 23.

Learning from the Landscape, sponsored by the Countryside Council for Wales and the Big Lottery, featured 150 pupils from 10 schools in Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire and Swansea.

All the children were given digital cameras and training in their use. They were then given the assignment of visiting various locations near their schools to take pictures. These include the Prince of Wales’ Carmarthenshire home at Llwynywermod, Abergwili Mansion, Dale Lighthouse, Pembrey Airport, and Pembroke and Loughor castles.

Project manager Cheryl Kitt said: “Each of the 10 participating schools had 15 pupils from the learning support units taking part in the project and they were assisted in the classroom sessions with editing and printing by a further 100 ‘mentors’ from other classes in the school.

“The aim was to enhance social and community inclusion, while also raising the self-esteem and the confidence of the children involved.”

The schools taking part were: Milford Haven Comprehensive & Milford Haven Junior School;  Coedcae Comprehensive & Maes Y Morfa Community Primary School, Llanelli; Penbryn Special School & Penyrheol Comprehensive School, Swansea; Queen Elizabeth High and Johnstown Primary School, Carmarthen;  Pantycelyn Comprehensive & Ysgol Rhys Pritchard Primary School, Llandovery.

* The exhibition at the Garden will be open from 10.45am on Friday September 23, and continues on Saturday and Sunday.

* The National Botanic Garden is open from 10am-6pm daily.
