Who is top of the tree?
Pupils from 14 schools will do battle at the National Botanic Garden of Wales to find out who is top of the form when it comes to decorating Christmas trees.
There’s a host of prizes up for grabs in this annual competition – which takes place in the stunning surrounds of the Great Glasshouse on Friday December 2.
It will see teams of up to 30 children from primary and secondary schools competing to create the perfectly decorated tree on the theme of a Wild Christmas (no fairy lights allowed!).
The aims of the event are to:
- demonstrate how household items can be re-used and recycled in innovative ways
- develop creativity skills and to perform live in front of other schools
- have fun
Schools taking part are: Gorseinon Primary, Swansea; Pontarddulais Comp, Swansea; QE High, Carmarthen; Aberaeron Primary, Ceredigion; Crynallt Infants, Neath-Port Talbot; St Aidan’s Primary, Haverfordwest; Maes yr Yrfa, Cefneithin, Carmarthen; Gwenllian Primary, Kidwelly, Carms; Heol Goffa, Llanelli; Garreglwyd, Ysgol y Gwendraeth, Drefach, Carms; Pontarddulais Primary; Gorslas Primary, Carms; Ysgol Y Castell, Kidwelly; and Llangewydd Primary, Bridgend.
Sponsors of the competition are: Carmarthenshire County Council, Cwm Environmental, Welsh Water and
Mrs Diane Organ – who has donated the Christmas trees for the children to decorate.
The competition is a Careers Wales West/National Botanic Garden partnership event.

The winners were Pontarddulais Primary School. The runners up were Garreglwyd (Gwendraeth). Third were Ysgol y Castell (Kidwelly)
Our Head of Learning, Jane Richmond said of the event:
“The day again went really well. There was a real buzz about the whole place and all the participants thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The theme this year was a Wild Christmas and the judges were particularly impressed by the standard of decorations and how some schools had interpreted the theme.”[Gallery not found]
“We would like to thank Career Wales west for their help in organising the event, Diane Organ, from Llanllwni, for the generous donation of the Christmas trees, Cwm Environmental, Carmarthenshire Council and Welsh Water for the wonderful prizes and all the schools for participating.”
