Wooden it be nice

Feel good about wood? Then the Wales Tree Festival (Aug 16-17) is an event not to miss. Everything from a quiet stroll and a talk on dormice, to the noisy, diesel against-the-grain clang of a chainsaw carver – that’s what in store at the National Botanic Garden next weekend. Organiser and interpretation office at the Garden, Bruce Langridge is looking forward to another weekend of terrific trees and wonderful wood. Says Bruce: “This is always a popular event and a fun weekend but there is lots we don’t know that we need to know about trees. We like to think this event has something for everyone.” And, looking at this year’s line-up, it’s hard to disagree: there are talks on timber, a tree bug hunt, a lovespoon carver, musical instrument makers, stick carving, wood turning, weaving with willow as well as walks in and around the Garden’s wonderful woodland. All the Wales Tree Festival activities are free with normal admission into the Garden, which is £8.50 adult, £7 OAPs, £4.50 Child (5-16) and under 5s are free. A family ticket (two adults and up to four children) is just £21. For more information about this and other Garden events, email info@gardenofwales.org.uk or call 01558 667149. Gŵyl Brenigamp Y’ch chi’n hoff o goed? Nid yw Gŵyl Goed Cymru (Awst 16-17) felly yn ddigwyddiad i’w golli. Popeth o fynd am dro’n dawel a sgwrs ar bathewod, i ddiasbedain swnllyd diesel yn erbyn y graen y cerfiwr llif gadwyn – dyna sy’n debyg o ddigwydd yn yr Ardd Fotaneg Genedlaethol dros y penwythnos. Mae’r trefnydd a swyddog dehongli’r Ardd, Bruce Langridge, yn edrych ymlaen i benwythnos arall o goed gogoneddus a phren penigamp. Meddai Bruce: “Mae hwn bob tro yn ddigwyddiad poblogaidd ac yn benwythnos hwyliog, ac mae llawer o bethau nad y’n ni’n gwybod, ac mae angen inni wybod, am goed. Hoffwn feddwl fod gan y digwyddiad hwn rywbeth at ddant pawb.” Ac edrych ar yr arlwy eleni, mae’n anodd anghytuno: mae sgyrsiau ar bren, helfa chwilod y coed, cerfiwr llwyau caru, gwneuthurwyr offerynnau cerddorol, cerfio ffyn, turnio pren, plethu helyg, ynghyd â theithiau cerdded yng nghoetir rhyfeddol yr Ardd a’r cyffiniau. Mae pob gweithgaredd yng Ngŵyl Coed Cymru yn rhad ac am ddim gyda’r tâl mynediad arferol i’r Ardd, sy’n £8.50 i oedolion, £7 i’r henoed, £4.50 i blant (5-16), plant o dan 5 am ddim. Mae tocyn deuluol (dau oedolyn ac hyd at bedwar plentyn) yn £21. Am fwy o wybodaeth am hwn a digwyddiadau eraill yn yr Ardd, e-bostiwch info@gardenofwales.org.uk, neu galwch 01558 667149.

The Waterwheel Choir from Aberdulais Falls will be performing today (Sat) in the Great Glasshouse between 12 and 2.30. Local fiddle and squeezebox duo, Fiddlebox will also be performing ‘walkabout’ music around the Garden. We also have ‘Make your own Lotions and Potions from Foraged Ingredients’ as our Fun Family Activities event. Hope that helps
