Artemisia californica – California Sagebrush

The sagebush is related to the Welsh mugwort. It is a pungent herb whose leaves were made into a medicinal tea to treat fever.  The smoke of burning brush has been used for removing skunk odour.

  • The Luiseño tribe of Southern California use the sagebush (hulvul) and white sage (qaashil) to build a ceremonial fire before hunting.
  • Sagebrush leaves were chewed or smoked in combination with tobacco to relieve colds.
