Urginea maritima – Sea Squill

Region: Mediterranean

Containing powerful substances that can, at the right dosage, strengthen the heart, sea squill was the most popular heart drug until the introduction of ones based on the foxglove of which the most popular is now digoxin.  Nowadays squill, & squill vinegar, is a common ingredient in over-the-counter cough mixtures.

  • Its large bulb has been anciently known for its ability to survive when dry, sprouting its long deep green leaves in winter without soil.
  • Age-old symbols of regeneration, bulbs are still hung outside houses and restaurants at New Year.
  • Squill is not eaten by goats so it can dominate the landscape in the arid areas. Have a look at some lovely flower images on http://www.west-crete.com/flowers/urginea_maritima.htm

 Rhanbarth: Môr y Canoldir

Mae Serennyn y Môr yn cynnwys sylweddau pwerus a all, drwy roi’r dogn cywir, gryfhau’r galon, a hwn oedd y cyffur mwyaf poblogaidd i drin y galon nes i gyffuriau’n seiliedig ar fysedd y cŵn gael eu cyflwyno, a’r un mwyaf poblogaidd o’u plith bellach yw digoxin. Erbyn hyn, mae serennyn, a’i finegr, yn gynhwysyn cyffredin mewn moddion peswch y gellir eu prynu dros y cownter.

  •  Mae ei fwlb mawr yn adnabyddus ers tro am ei allu i oroesi sychder, gan dyfu dail gwyrdd tywyll hir yn y gaeaf heb bridd.
  • Fel symbolau oesol o adfywio, caiff bylbiau eu hongian o hyd y tu allan i dai a bwytai adeg y Flwyddyn Newydd.
  • Nid yw geifr yn bwyta seren y môr felly gall llawer ohono dyfu mewn ardaloedd cras.
